First off I would like to say that I love ALL things computers. In all honesty, I would
like to own both a Mac and a PC, or several of each really. I have done much research
and have used both platforms and have come to the conclusion that is all depends on personal preference, your technical aptitude and your “care factor” when it comes to
increasing your knowledge. That being said, I will explain why I PREFER using a PC
as my primary technology station.
1. 80% of the programs that I run are not available on a MAC, and if they were, they would cost more than they do for PC
2. I cannot get a high end sound card with surround sound encoding abilities for a mac. (At least this is what I was told at the mac store)
3. I like to customize my PCs and use whatever hardware I want to maximize my PCs capabilities. Mac pretty much doesn’t allow much change in your computers architecture.
4. I run my own web server and my own email server from home so I can manage these things locally. I know Apache and Eudora can be used on a mac to perform these same functions, however, IIS and MS Exchange were much easier to use and implement, and IIS was included in Windows XP.
5. I also have my own Domain Server (ebomusic.net) which is used to manage the rest of the computers in the home (there are several) Microsoft provides ALL things to administer and run business. So much so , that Iphones have an MS Exchange application to sync email with MS Exchange because it is quickly becoming the world wide mail platform.
6. Since 2002, I have been able to access my computer remotely from anywhere I have in internet connection. This was included in XP Pro, but MAC may have a built in utility now, but did not before
7. MACs cost a lot more and when I got into computers, I didn’t have a ton of money.
8. In order to be an MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer) I needed to know all things Windows
9. OF course, all geeks need Games and Mac is really lacking in games big time.
10. Software Development kits that easily interfaces with the OS for lots of easy to build open source apps
That being said, after using both Mac and PC, I find that if I were a NEW user who had never used a computer, I would find that both operating systems would require equal amounts of confusion when learning something new, but MAC makes it MUCH easier to do things out of the box, like build web sites, record music, make DVDs, and things like that. Microsoft on the other hand, built an operating system, that provides for the simple man, but also for the “nerd to the bone” type who wants to run a large computer network and utilize every business tool known to man. This however makes the operating system somewhat daunting for a new user. Knowing how to maintain a PC properly IS a skill in and of itself, that most MAC users need not worry about it. This goes back to technical aptitude and what you really want to do with PC.
Microsoft still continues to own 85% of the market and nearly 100% of the SMB and Enterprise markets. The fact that Mac and MS started at roughly the same period in history, I have to believe that at some point, MS had a superior product since it pretty much monopolized the industry. If it was so terrible….having the option to get a mac, why is most of the world built on Windows technology? That where Mac ends and Windows really begins. The Business Sector. Mac is not even on the playing field. But that’s okay, because that’s not what they do.
I personally would love to have a MAC, just for something new and different to look at, and to play with and because Leopard is a beautiful operating system, but there is nothing it can do that my Windows based PC cant do, so I cannot justify the cost.
Really one is not better than the other. Its personal preference, and what YOU the end user feels more comfortable with. I personally LOVE the PC bashing commercials by Apple. They are genius and hilarious and perhaps they may inspire a paradigm shift, which we are seeing in the twenty something demographic and in universities, which is great. We call be one big happy family.
