Eric,

Where would you recommend starting with a study on Music Theory. While I have been playing piano and guitar for awhile, my knowledge of theory is next to nothing. Where should I begin?

I would start with learning the major scales in all 12 keys as well as learning the key signatures for all 12 keys.

I would then learn chord construction (ie: a major triad is made of the 1st, 3rd and 5th scale steps in the major scale)

Then if you are a guitar player, I would certainly being studying the first 7 modes of the major scale and the pentatonic scales.

Hope this helps!

It has helped. While I have always been good at faking certain things, it's nice to know what the hell I'm doing from time to time Smile

Yeah, there are lots of people who just have that natural ear and can compose some great music and guitar pieces, but I have noticed all of my favorite guitar players are well versed in music theory and how it applies to guitar and in my opinion and REALLY helps in solo composition and coming up with new, creative musical ideas
