I love the description and I'd have to say: "yes, please." to all three of those items!

Personally if I had my druthers I would have 2 SM-57s and possibly a Sennheiser E609 for recording half stacks. I prefer the old "Center" and "Off Axis" positions for recording them. I find that it is best to have a set of head phones on while figuring out your exact mic placement. Have the guitarist play a bit while moving the mics around and monitoring through the head phones, you'd be amazed at how different it can sound just by mic placement. Wink

Yeah, I am with, thats how I like micing my cabs as well. It really does make a huge difference in how it sounds just from simple mic placement. You just have to keep trying things until you find that sweet spot. You can really add a lot to the stereo image just from moving mics.

Tell me do you find that the sweet spot varies from amp to amp and application to application? For example: Mics may be placed in one place for say metal but then moved again on the same amp for a more bluesy song.

Amp to Amp is a more obvious explanation (different tonal characteristics)

But application to application on the same amp is a bit different. For me any way I noticed moving the mics can give you a boost in certain frequencies and a drop in others. The 2 mic setup helps to keep things pretty even but you can still calibrate or fine tune the sound your really looking for.

I always mic the amp the same way for the most part. For different genres of music, these differences are usually generated by the tone of the guitar, the amp settings and the player.

As far as frequencies go, I record flat and let the guitar and amp do the work and then adjust in the mix accordingly. Unless you are an audiophile you are recording for the masses and for the artist. You can trust you ear, but you dont need to be an Eric Johnson to record a good album.

Thanks for the info dude. I will try and keep that in mind next time I mic the amp.
