I am looking for some information on how to set up mics on a drum set. How many mics do you need? what types? What are their optimal placements? How do you get rid of the ambient "room" sound?

Thanks!

Well I like to place a mic on the snare, the kick, one on each tom, one on the hat, 2-3 overheads and one for the cymbals.

The trick to avoiding room ambience is to have some acoustical foam installed and you can actually have your room analyzed for free if you go to http://www.sweetwater.com/room-analysis.

You also want cardioid for your drums and some omnis for your overheads.

As far as the types, well that all depends on how much money you want to shell out. You can get a Samson 8 Kit for $299.99 or yuo can get a 5 piece Earthworks DK25R for $1699.97

Is there a setup that is good for making live recordings? Like on stage or when a studio environment is not available?

Thanks in advance.

I am assuming you are talking about the boneheads playing the drums in your garage Wink

You know that application is very difficult due to the terrible reverb in an unfinished garage. Your best bet is probably going to still be micing them up as mentioned before. Live drums are pretty much mic'd the same as studio drums, they are just mixed entirely differently depending on the acoustic characteristics of the venue and the sound system available.

Thanks EBO, probably not going to be recording the drums in the garage any time soon. I enjoy "jamming" with those "boneheads" but there really isn't anything serious going on. I am looking for information on this for personal reference because I may one day have my own drum set.

Ultimately I would like to get V-Drums although they are kind of hard to come by at a decent price. If you look on Craiglist you can typically find some sort of decent set complete for around $400-$500. I have only seen the V-Drums on there once and they were $500...MAN! I wished I had money then...LOL
